How to Write an Impressive Job Application Letter

Greetings, graduate! Writing a job application letter is probably one of the greatest concerns you have right now. Now that you’ve left the comfortable confines of the university and are venturing into the real world, you now have more “grown-up” problems – the most important one being about landing the job of your dreams. So, how do you write that crucial letter that will make employers single you out from a sea of hopefuls? Here are some ideas and examples of job application letters.

You are no longer a college student living the eat-sleep-study-party-like-a-frat-boy kind of life. Yup, you said goodbye to your juvenile existence when you tossed that cap at graduation. The first thing you have to remember about writing a job application letter is that you have to sound professional, responsible and mature. This means starting letters with a “Hey” or a “What’s up?” is unacceptable. Use the more appropriate “Dear Sir/Madam” or “To Whom It May Concern” to open your letters. Also, don’t forget to state the position for which you are applying for. Don’t expect your employers to go through the hassle of matching you up with a suitable job themselves.

The next thing to keep in mind is to highlight your talents/skills related to the position you are applying for. If you are applying for an advertising position for example, mention how creative and innovative you are. It wouldn’t hurt to say that you work well with all kinds of people as well. The important thing is to look responsible, capable, with a great personality to boot.

Finally, stay direct to the point. Employers don’t need to know the history of your childhood. Be concise. End with a sentence or two about why you want to work for the specific company you are applying in and tell them that you will be looking forward to their reply.
